Gold Hick

Taken from "Alien Lanes" 1995

"All my dumb luck and all my misgivings
I thrust them aside for the dead for the living
I want my vehicle, my saucer-shaped coffin
I'm Mighty Pro-Jet
I'm Baron Von Richtofen"

A 30 second classic! Nuff said.

in 30 seconds Pollard manages to thrill me in ways that sometimes his recent 3 plus minutes songs couldnt even imagine doing on a good day.

A bit harsh. Not such a fan of his newer material?

harsh? nah. i wouldnt go as far as saying i am not a fan of present day pollard, but there does seem to be fewer things that are hitting me over the head and blowing my mind. with a thousand releases a year though, can i really complain? no. the boston spaceships stuff is probably by far my favorite of the most recent releases, the songs are fun, and i seem to be able to listen to them without any sort of expectation, which sometimes gets in the way of just being able to push forward, accept and enjoy the now and today of pollards work.

He does have a different style these days but I do like his post GBV material. It has a different energy. I like it when he writes a proper song. His experimental stuff these days can sound a bit too obscure for my tastes. Though I do mainly like it all.

Almost Fall-like in its demented rush: Bob has never copped to the Fall being an influence (hey, I believe him) but this is one tune that MES could cover with aplomb even now: "I-ah thrust them ayside-ah with the did and the livin-ah" ;-)

A friend back in the day loved the I'm Baron Von Richtofen line.

Told him there was more where that came from.

I want my vehicle, my saucer shaped coffin... who the hell else could come up with that?
